Affinity

Affinity is a beautifully shot costume drama set in Victorian England. Like Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith, it has a lesbian romance at the heart of a tale that explores the underside of "proper" society. With a gloomy prison setting and a host of supernatural undertones, the movie carries a darker tone and creepier setting than the previous two works, but is consistent with the mood of the novel it is based on.

Aimee & Jaguar -(German with English subs)

Berlin 1943/44 ("The Battle of Berlin"). Felice, an intelligent and courageous Jewish woman who lives under a false name, belongs to an underground organization. Lilly, a devoted mother of four, though an occasional unfaithful wife, is desperate for love. Her friends flee, she decides to sit out the war with Lilly. One hot day in August 1944, the Gestapo is waiting in Lilly's flat.

Alien Prey

Hum - this is a Sci-Fi lesbian film so I guess that about sums it up. Jessica and Josephine are in a relationship but when they pick up an injured Alien the relationship starts to be questioned by Jessica and then the plot thickens and it turns out that the alien is flesh eater and who eats two lesbians for his meal. Don't blame me I did not make this film ! Oh well !

Alley Cats, The

This is an early film by director Radley Metzgern and is about a bored German housewife in the 60´s. It tells the story of her lesbian adventures. The story takes place in various European cities and is about a couple who will be marrying soon but before that happens they are both having affairs with various women. Hum.... I think I would skip the marriage ! Fun and kitschy.

World pride 2000 is happening in Rom, will the pope allow it to happen? Pressure is put on the mayor of Rome to stop it. will the parade go on? See the film!

Antonia’s Line

This Dutch film won an Oscar ! and is about a mother who returns to a small town at the end of WW II. The town is a shocking place with lots of scandals happening and certainly some strange people living there. The daughter is a lesbian and wants a baby so she fits right in. I enjoyed the people in this picture a lot and best of all the lesbian is a very well written one.

Another Way

This is Hungary before the fall of Communism. It is the story of two women who fall in love and the drama they face because of it. Films like this should be seen so that we Gays / Lesbians know what a wonderful life we have as compared to these women and that we should never never let a government control our lives again !

5 actress meet at an audition only to realize this film is not for them. What occurs is a 1 day story of them spending the day together getting to know each others secrets and there is a lesbian story line too

Being John Malkovich

Craig, a puppeteer, takes a filing job in a low-ceilinged office in Manhattan. Although married to the slightly askew Lotte, he hits on a colleague, the sexually frank Maxine. She's bored but snaps awake when he finds a portal leading inside John Malkovich: for 15 minutes you see, hear, and feel whatever JM is doing, then you fall out by the New Jersey Turnpike. Maxine makes it commercial, selling trips for $200; also, she's more interested in Lotte than in Craig, but only when Lotte is inside JM. JM finds out what's going on and tries to stop it, but Craig sees the portal as his road to Maxine and to success as a puppeteer. Meanwhile, Lotte discovers others interested in the portal

Benzina – Italian with English subs

When Stella takes action in the heat of the moment, blood flies and the young women end up with a corpse on their hands. The lovers realize they must flee in order to stay together.

Between Two Women

This jewel of a film is strictly for romantics. The film is a quiet character study of a woman who finds the courage to open herself to the possibilities of love and happiness. After a lifetime of repression and fear of disappointing family, the lead character can no longer deny the intense feelings that have developed between herself and her son's schoolteacher, and finally allows herself to experience what she really wants. The film may not contain the flash and raunchiness that many viewers are used to (no kissing, although there is some very heart-warming hand-holding), but for this viewer, it was stirring and captivating, and one of the most vividly romantic pieces I've seen in a long time. Magnificent acting highlighted this beautiful story

Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, The (Bitteren Traenen der Petra von Kant, Die) German, English subtitles

Petra von Kant is very successful as a fashion designer who is both arrogant and self centered. She has a secretary who is also the maid and co-designer and who in general makes life miserable for. The Karin enters into her life. Karin is 23 very pretty and wants to be a model. Petra falls in love with Karin and ask her to move in with her. The film then deals with the emotions of this affair while it is happening and when it ends.

Blessed are those who thirst (Original title: Salige er de som tørster)- Norway with english subs

Semi-closeted lesbian cop Hanne Wilhelmsen investigates several cases of rape and murder in and around Oslo. All but one of the victims are immigrant girls; the only survivor is found strapped to her bed in a sorry state. The killer seems to have racist motives, and leaves strange numbers written in blood on the crime scene.

This is a police mystery that gradually turns into a violent revenge thriller. It looks like an extended commercial, shot in a flashy, rapid style. A bit hard to follow, but the ending is very exciting!

Hanne, the heroine, is a tough, no-nonsense cop who just happens to be lesbian. Her girlfriend, Cecilie, actually complains that Hanne is a workaholic with no time for bed sheet action. So, there is precious little sex in this movie, I'm afraid!

But it's simply great watching a thriller where the main character's sexual preference isn't billboarded, but simply taken for granted. They should make more movies like this one.

Blue Gate Crossing – Taiwan, English subs

An is-she-or-isn't-she gay comedy focused on a Taiwanese teen, the boy she might like, and the girl she may love.

Bobbies Girl

This is the story of a lesbian couple Bobbie (played by Bernadette Peters) and Bailey (played by Rachel Ward) who own together a pub in Ireland and live a rather quiet life until Bobbie´s nephew comes to stay. There is also the chance that the brother could be gay (played by. Johnathan Silverman) and a death threating sickness – oh well see to the film to find out the rest by yourselves.

Bound

Corky, a lesbian ex-con, hired to work in an apartment as a plumber, meets neighbors Caesar, who launders money for the Mafia, and his girlfriend Violet. The two women have a love affair and decide to steal $2,000,000 that Caesar has in custody before he gives them back to Mafia boss Gino Marzone. Caesar is set up by the two scheming women as a scapegoat but things start to go wrong when he reacts in an unexpected way

Boys on The Side

This is sort of a girls road movie starting with Jane who is an out of work night club singer who decides to go to LA She is looking for a ride there and places an advertisement in the newspapers. Robin who is shy answers the ad and they take off together for LA They make a stop in Pittsburgh to visit Holly who is married to a drug deal. When they arrive he is beating her and the girls stop it but in turn he is badly hurt and in panic the three girls leave him there only to find out later that he is dead. As they get to know each other we are let into the fact that Jane is a lesbian, Robin has Aids and is trying to escape the sickness and of course Holly who is running away from the murder. The rest of the store is about the closeness of the girls despite their differences. Whoppi Goldberg plays Jane the one who is Lesbian and does a fantastic job of playing a Lesbian without the old cliché‚s. A wonderful film to see and sniffle. As strange as it seems Hollywood can also make good Homosexual movies if they want to.

Business of Strangers

In this thriller a business woman and her female assistant get into a love you / hate you relationship. We are smart enough to know that they have lesbian feelings for each other much as the story lines in the 50´s and 60´s. There was never any real discussion about being a lesbian back then but it was still acted out by the actors (much like this film). So if you want to enjoy a thriller which has the lesbian story line to it but does not discuss it you might want to see this film

Butterfly – Hong Hong, with English subs

This film from Hong Kong is about a woman who is both a wife and mother in a middle class family but discovers that she is falling in love with a woman and is set in the 1980´s amongst the democracy student movement. See the film to find out if she leaves her straight life or goes with the other women.

But I’m a Cheerleader

Medgan is a 17 year old high school student who is pretty, popular and a great student. She has it all and dates the captain of the football team but doesn´t seem to really fancy him very much thus leading her parents (played by Mink Stole and Bud Cort) to think she is a lesbian so they decide to send her to a rehabilitation camp run by Mary Brown who is a homophobic counselor. Will they succeed or will Medgan have her coming out?

Eunice is walking along the highways of northern England from one filling station to another. She is searching for Judith, the woman, she says to be in love with. It's bad luck for the women at the cash desk not to be Judith, because Eunice is eccentric, angry and extreme dangerous. One day she meets Miriam, hard of hearing and a little ingenuous, who feels sympathy for Eunice and takes her home. Miriam is very impressed by Eunice's fierceness and willfulness and follows her on the search for Judith. Shocked by Eunice's cruelty she tries to make her a better person, but she looses ground herself.

By Hook or By Crook

"By hook or by crook" is said to be a female Midnight Cowboy and is the story of 3 weeks in the life of a small town butch woman called Shy (played by Silas Howard) who goes to the big city and meets Valentine (played by Harry Dodge). This starts the story of these butches and opens up to the public the often hidden world of these women. The film is hard to explain but a must see on your list as it is a ground breaking film about people who are not fully female and not fully male but refer to themselves as HE.

This is our history as seen in the movies. It should be seen as it has been a long struggle to finally get movies who show us in the way we really are in all our diversity and not as, strange effeminate people who live in the dark waiting to seduce people, wear woman's clothes all the time and kill ourselves as we were supposed to do. As you view the older films you will see we have moved light years ahead.

Chasing Amy

Affleck plays a cartoonist who falls in love with a girl he meets in a cafe. Turns out she's not also a fellow cartoonist, but a lesbian too! What will he do about it? What CAN he do about it? Ben also has a very close male friend who probably loves him without knowing it.

Children’s Hour, The

Best friends Karen Wright and Martha Dobie are headmistresses at a successful private school for girls in New England. Mary Tilford, a spiteful, angry child, is caught in a lie and punished. In retaliation she tells her grandmother, a matriarch in the town, that Martha was "jealous" of Karen's relationship with Dr. Joe Cardin, and tells that Martha's Aunt Lily thought those feelings were "unnatural." Grandma believes her and pulls Mary out of school. The word quickly spreads and within days Karen and Martha are faced with empty classrooms. Joe is fired from the hospital for siding with the teachers. Karen and Martha sue for slander in a case that makes national headlines.

Chinese Botanist’s Daughters, The – Chinese with English subs

Set in China in the 1980s or 1990s, the film tells the story of, Li Ming, a young orphan of Tangshan earthquake, who leaves to study at the home of a renowned botanist. A secretive man and commanding father, he lives on an island that he has transformed into a luxurious garden. Anxious to share this solitary life, his daughter, An, welcomes with joy the arrival of the female student. Soon their friendship develops into a sensual, but forbidden attraction. Incapable of separating themselves, Ming and An create a dangerous arrangement to be able to continue spending their lives together: Ming marries An's brother, who is a PLA soldier and cannot bring his wife with him. However, An and Ming's relationship is observed by the botanist who thus gets a heart attack. Before he dies, he tells police that it's his daughter and daughter-in-law's homosexuality "disease" that kills him. Thus, An and Ming are sentenced to death by a court and executed.

Choses Secretes – French with English subs

Chutney Popcorn

An off beat comedy about a lesbian couple and a heterosexual couple. Two of the women are sisters and Sarita (straight) finds out she can not have children. Her sister is lesbian and can have a child. The film moves on to her decision to have a child for her sister and brother-in-law but first she has to convince her girlfriend that this is the right thing to do. Also very interesting is the way the Indian family value have mixed with the New York City values to create this multi-culture film

Female authors gather at a small northern coastal retreat to work on their writing skills. A first-time guest who lives for the moment finds herself struggling with her sexuality after discovering her roommate is a lesbian

Common Ground

I have just watch this made for Showtime film and it took my breath away. It is three separate story woven together by the fact that they take place in small town in New England in the USA. It takes place over three generations.

1st part starts out with the story of a young girl who goes into the military and ends up becoming friendly with a group of gay men (friends of Dorothy) amongst which is a solider played by Jason Priestley. He befriends her and takes her to her first gay bar. Unhappily for her, she gets her first kiss by a woman and then the bar is raided by the police. In the end she get discharged by the military and must go home to her small town with a discharge for sexual reasons. The whole town turns against her (including her Mother) and she must leave for NYC - where she can live her life as she wants.

2nd part is about a young boy and his coming out in this small town. He is on the swim team and is harassed and beaten by the other boys since he is different. He turns to his French teacher for help and understanding but the teacher is a closet case and doesn't help him much ! The story is handled with truthfulness and is a must be seen !!

3rd part is the same town but this time is in the third generation and is about the "marriage" of two men who live there. The path has been made way for them by the previous teacher who rather than leave the town has stayed on with his lover. So the town is more open to the "marriage" except a few war veterans! Harvey Fierstein plays in this one as well as having written it and does a wonderful job as the sissy and his one liners will keep you laughing.

The Color Purple

This film follows the life of Celie, a young black girl growing up in the early 1900's. The first time we see Celie, she is 14 - and pregnant - by her father. We stay with her for the next 30 years of her tough life.

Costa Brava – Spanish, English subs

This film is set in wonderful Barcelona and is about a female touring scientist who falls for a female tour guide. 90 minutes. of love and romance and a great city in the background.

Cynara

1883, Baycliff, an isolated English village on the Irish Sea. Two women's friendship becomes passion. Cynara, a sculptor, alone, befriends Byron, a visitor who's left Paris in unhappiness. They ride horses, talk, play chess, and exchanging tenderness. Byron inspires Cynara as she sculpts, Cynara becomes Byron's muse as she writes. Then each imagines expressing physical passion to the other, Cynara's visions in black and white, Byron's in color. Their touches remain brief. Does respectability hold them back? Amazingly simple in concept, this movie has won awards for its treatment of 3 young lesbians coming to terms with their sexuality. Each of the girls are given a hand-held camera which they use to film themselves and their family during two or three years. They speak into

the camera-eye about their worries and joys, and their fear of being rejected by their parents when they come out to them. Swedish TV has shown a number of "hand-held" self-portraits by young people over the years and it's a really interesting idea. Not boring as you may think

Dr T. & The Woman

Richard Gere plays an obstetrician/gynecologist who has life thrown out of wack when his wife has a breakdown and his problem that his daughter Hudson's is having a lesbian affair. To see how he deals with these “problems” see the film.
